Here's a list of the top ten. However, Legacy is ranked #1. http://genealogy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

There are many, the reaction of others, some (FAP I understand, is beautifully drawn).

But think about the future ... If you live with it, you can find that at some point want to go with a commercial program (more features and works better or faster) with large amounts of data.

Thus, any software that you go, make sure you have the option of your data in a GEDCOM export file (critical if it) is an online program.

All the genealogy software are in fact the software database. And they all have their own structures and database formats only. So the only way to get information is from one program to another through a common format - and now the most common is the GEDCOM format.

All that I can run commercial software GEDCOM import files seen.

And at regular intervals, you must export your data in a GEDCOM format - and save a copy on CD / DVD or another computer, or 2 There is no feeling worse than one hundred hours of work for them, then all you lose one disk fails, is a program no longer available, orOnline service out of service.

Legacy Lite and FAP is the only book I know.

I use Roots Magic, sold for $ 29 I use it since its Family Origins for Windows 6.0. RM 3.0 is FOW version 12, rigamarole by certain licensing agreements.

Family Tree Maker is a little more, but is on other things. It is the market leader.

If you Google "Genealogy Software" comparison would be a lot of hits.

The program typically pay better than free, so there would be no market for them otherwise.
